Multiple sources in Gambia confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Barrow is alive.

Jeffery Smith, a journalist with Vanguard Africa, confirmed that Mr. Barrow was alive.

Another Gambian journalist, Demba Kandeh, also confirmed same to PREMIUM TIMES.

Mr. Barrow has remained in Gambia to ensure he is sworn in as president on January 19 after he defeated outgoing leader, Yahya Jammeh, in the December 1 election.

Mr. Jammeh, who initially conceded to his opponent, later recanted and has since vowed to stay on in office.

President Muhammadu Buhari is currently leading a West African, ECOWAS, mediation asking Mr. Jammeh to step down.

The Nigerian government on Wednesday said it still hoped to resolve the Gambian conflict peacefully after Mr. Jammeh accused ECOWAS of declaring war on Gambia by insisting that all options including military deployment were on the table to make Mr. Jammeh leave power.

Gambia Electoral Commission Head Flees Country

The Chairman of the Gambian Electoral Commission has fled the country following threats to his life, his nephew said on Tuesday, January 3.

Alieu Momar Njai had declared Adama Barrow the winner of the Dec. 1 presidential election, but President Yahya Jammeh has refused to relinquish power, challenging the election results in court.

Modou Njai told journalists that his uncle had left the country because of the threats.

“He was not willing to leave but the family had to put pressure on him.

“I understand that he is currently outside Gambia,’’ he said.

Security forces had earlier occupied the office of the electoral commission and denied staff access for weeks, but have since left the premises.

Mr. Barrow said on Monday that he would take power on Jan. 19 as mandated by the constitution, in spite of Mr. Jammeh’s court challenge.

After over two decades in power, Mr. Jammeh, 51, lost the election to Mr. Barrow, a former real estate agent who was little known even in Gambia before he announced his candidacy.

A pilot who allegedly passed out in the cockpit of a Boeing 737 in Canada has been arrested on suspicion of being drunk.

Police in Calgary say Capt. Miroslav Gronych was “behaving oddly before he became unconscious in the cockpit” on Saturday, December 31, 2016.

According to CNN, the plane with 99 passengers and six crew members, was scheduled to fly to Regina before heading to Winnipeg and Cancun, Mexico.

Gronych, a 37-year-old Slovak national, was charged with having control of an aircraft while impaired.

“Initial tests conducted by police indicate the pilot was severely impaired by alcohol,” police said in a statement.

Budget airline Sunwing apologized for their pilot’s behaviour and commended the rest of the crew for their diligence in handling what they described as a “very unfortunate matter.”

The airline statement read: “Dear Customers, we will like to take the opportunity to advise you of an incident that occurred earlier this morning.

“We can confirm that shortly before 7 a.m. local time, the gate agents, first officer and crew of Sunwing flight 595, departing from Calgary and destined for Cancun, determined that the Captain was unfit to fly and reported this accordingly.

“The Captain was immediately escorted off of the aircraft and the incident is now under investigation with local authorities.

“We were able to secure a new Captain and are pleased to report that our customers are now en route to their destination after experiencing a minimal delay.

“We are very apologetic for any upset that this has caused and would like to assure our customers that safety remains our utmost priority.”

Sunwing said the plane took off a short time after with a different pilot.

Scorpion Goal: I’ve Never Scored Such Before In My Life – Olivier Giroud

* Arsenal FC beat Crystal Palace 2-0 in the English Premier League match on Sunday, January 1, 2017 to open an account that they are indeed title contenders

* One time out of favour striker, Frenchman Olivier Giroud started the victory party by scoring a sumptuous scorpion goal that made everyone ecstatic

The race for who becomes the Premier League king continues as Arsenal Football Club brushed past Crystal Palace at the Emirates yesterday by two unreplied goals to show they are real title contenders and not pretenders.

Olivier Giroud put the ball into the net in the first half when Arsenal dangerman Alexis Sanchez crossed the ball to him, before Alex Iwobi scored a looping header to put the match beyond their visitors, Crystal Palace. The goal by Giroud was a statement by the former Ligue One player that he deserves a permanent first team shirt with the Gunners.

The Frenchman striker’s goal was a bit similar to Manchester United Henrik Mikhitaryn’s scorpion goal in a recent EPL match. However, the Arsenal goal poacher’s own was out of this world.

The goal was nicknamed “The Perfect Goal” by some football pundits.

Russia Denies Reports Of Retaliation Against New US Sanctions

Russia’s foreign ministry denied reports it was retaliating against new US sanctions leveled against the Kremlin by closing an Anglo-American school in Moscow.
On Thursday, CNN reported that in the wake of the US’ expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats, Russia ordered the closing of the Anglo-American School of Moscow,  Thursday, December 29, citing an unnamed US official with knowledge of the action.

The school serves the children of Western embassy personnel from Canada, Britain, and the US.

Russia’s foreign ministry on Friday denied it moved to close the school.

Russia also ordered the closing of a US embassy vacation house, located about 16 kilometers west of Moscow, CNN reported.

A spokeswoman for Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, hinted at the response Russia would take in an earlier statement, saying US actions against Russian diplomats in the US would receive a similar response that she said would “immediately backfire at US diplomats in Russia.”

“The outgoing US administration has not given up on its hope of dealing one last blow to relations with Russia, which it has already destroyed,” her statement said.

The Kremlin earlier said the US would “receive an answer” if it took new punitive actions against Russia. The Obama administration indicated previously that it would hold Russia accountable for cyberattacks that US intelligence agencies have said were designed to interfere with the US election.

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he would not expel US diplomats in retaliation for the expulsion of Russian diplomats from the US.

Debbie Reynolds, Daughter Carrie Fisher To Be Buried Side By Side

A joint memorial service and side-by-side burial are being planned for mother-and-daughter Hollywood stars Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher, who died a day apart earlier this week in Los Angeles, the family said on Friday.

Todd Fisher, son of Reynolds and younger brother to Carrie, said that he caught a glimpse of hummingbirds at a cemetery site at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills.

This, he noted convinced him it was the ideal spot for their final resting place.

“That’s the way it was meant to be,” Todd Fisher, 58, told Reuters, recalling that his mother, the Oscar-nominated singer and actress, had a special fondness for hummingbirds, which were regular visitors to the grounds of her Beverly Hills home.

Fisher said he and other relatives were gathering this weekend to firm up funeral arrangements, including dates.

He said the family was planning two private events – a joint memorial celebration and a burial of his mother and sister next to one another at Forest Lawn – to be followed by some form of public commemoration of the two women.

Reynolds, who sang and danced her way into the hearts of moviegoers in such Hollywood musicals as “Singin’ in the Rain,” suffered a stroke and died on Wednesday at the age of 84.
